Campaigning groups have been key drivers of inter-governmental negotiations, ranging from the regulation of hazardous wastes to a global ban on land mines and the elimination of slavery.

In 8A, students study the role of IGOs once again, as well as the impact of neoliberal policies on development. Superpowers influence the global economy (promoting free trade and capitalism) through a variety of IGOs (World Bank, IMF, WTO, World Economic Forum (WEF)) Superpowers have a disproportionate influence on the global economy. While IGOs are increasingly important, little is known about the conditions under which they address climate security challenges, and when they do so effectively. They are organizations that restrain the behavior of their members. Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) are structures created by states to enhance political cooperation and communication. This is recognized in the consultative relationship. Most important, from their perspective, a new article was added providing for NGOs to have consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Initially, it was expected that this would only be taken up by a small number of global commercial organizations and trade union federations. To the IGOs, the INGOs are of importance in three respects. The evolving role of IGOs shows that they will remain key actors in global system.
