The book follows Breq, the sole survivor of a starship destroyed by treachery, and the vessel of that ship's artificial consciousness, as she attempts to revenge herself on the ruler of her civilization. While units are part of a ship, they can have unique personality traits and interests separate as long as the ship allows it. In Ancillary Justice, Breq states that One Esk learned to sing to please a lieutenant while Justice of Toren only tolerated One Esk's habit of singing. Leckie wrote that the producers responded positively to her concerns about how the ungendered, dark-skinned Radchaai characters could be presented in a visual medium. Breq was formerly the segment Justice of Toren One Esk Nineteen. This means that almost everyone in the novel is viewed as a woman, including Breq, the main character.
