Abstract. Duckweed was exposed to six different cadmium concentrations, such as, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 mg/L and the experiment was continued for 22 days. With almost 400,000 species to choose from, plant biologists seeking a study species have no shortage of raw material. The present study investigates the ability of two genus of duckweed (Lemna minor and Spirodela polyrhiza) to phytoremediate cadmium from aqueous solution. In the face of such diversity, plant model systems have come to the fore in many disciplines, with Arabidopsis thaliana being the most conspicuous example.

Spirodela polyrhiza forms turions, starch-storing perennial organs.

The present invention relates to a composition for the prevention or treatment of liver diseases containing an extract of Buchungcho extract as an active ingredient. A clone of S. polyrhiza 7498 from North Carolina, United States, had been subjected to physical mapping and whole-genome shotgun sequencing using the “454” platform ().Because of the short reads (∼350 bp) of the “454” system, the genome of Spirodela (Sp7498V2) was highly fragmented and could not resolve complex regions, leading to …

Stomatal morphology and ontogeny were studied in the epistomatic fronds of Spirodela intermedia W. Koch. Stomata in mature fronds do not form rows, but the orientation of their axis closely follows the veins; stomatal frequency increases gradually from a zone without stomata, near the proximal end, up to the margins all around the frond. The light-induced process of starch degradation starts with an erosion of the surface of starch grains. The grain size decreases over a period of red irradiation and the surface becomes rougher.

Abstract: Growth rates of S. polyrhiza were reduced by chromate concentrations higher than 50 μM. The CT, which had well-organized chloroplasts, thus having the ability to photosynthesize as also supported by the chlorophyll content, seemed to carry out a different strategy to fulfill its organic carbon demand. Analysis of plant cells by transmission electron microscopy revealed the accumulation of starch grains in the chloroplasts following the application of chromate at low concentrations or for short periods (100 μM for 2 days or 500 μM for 1 day).

The anatomy and ultrastructure of CTs in Spirodela polyrhiza are considerably different from those of the frond and root.
