Ragged Island sits about half-way between Long Island and Cuba, to give you an idea of where it is. Located 222 miles southeast of the capital, Nassau, the Ragged Island chain is just 139 miles north of Cuba. Ragged Island is part of the Jumentos Cays and Ragged Island Chain.The crescent-shaped chain measures over 110 miles (180 km) in length and includes cays known as Raccoon Cay, Hog Cay and Double-Breasted Cay. In this issue, our Bahamas series is going to explore the 60 mile long chain of small islands, rocks, and reefs called the Jumentos Cays (northern part) and the Ragged Islands (southern part). Little Ragged Island is the largest private island in the Bahamas with 720 acres made up of beautiful beaches, sand bars, 50 ft. elevations, and deep water access. The string of colorful miniature islands within the chain, with provocative names like Raccoon Cay, Hog Cay and Double-Breasted Cay, are also a lure for boaters wishing to discover their many hidden treasures.

I’m thinking about Ragged. They extend south from George Town in the Exumas and since there is only one settlement and no services in the whole chain the farther south you go the fewer other cruisers you will see. There aren’t a lot of people on Ragged. That’s 72 people on the whole Ragged Island chain (one of the islands is called “Double Breasted Cay”). The Bahamas Family of Islands represent the less populated, yet equally intriguing, island gems of The Bahamas island chain. For centuries, from well before European visitors first arrived, the islands have been a crossroads for commerce, travel and livelihood.
