Marie Byrd Land, unclaimed region of Antarctica, bordering on the South Pacific Ocean and extending from the Ross Sea and Ice Shelf (west) to Ellsworth Land (east). It extends between 103°24'W and 79°45'W. Gordon Wiltsie/AlpenImage, Ltd.

We describe a terrestrial faunal community including only Tardigrada and Rotifera, present on inland nunataks of Ellsworth Land, Antarctica (∼75°–77° S, 70°–73° W). Although Ellsworth knew it was malfunctioning, no effort to land and repair the radio would be attempted until crossing the 80th meridian. The fauna is exceptional in its simplicity, including five tardigrade species (three new to science) and at least two rotifer species, which comprise two consumer trophic levels. When Ellsworth estimated they had reached 80° W, he dropped an American flag as a sign of his having discovered the vast plain and recorded in his journal his intention of naming the area James W. Ellsworth Land in honor of his father. The Ellsworth Mountains are the highest mountain ranges in Antarctica, forming a 360 km (224 mi) long and 48 km (30 mi) wide chain of mountains in a north to south configuration on the western margin of the Ronne Ice Shelf in Marie Byrd Land. Ellsworth Land is a portion of the Antarctic continent bounded on the west by Marie Byrd Land, on the north by Bellingshausen Sea, on the northeast by the base of Antarctic Peninsula, and on the east by the western margin of Ronne Ice Shelf. The former is by far the higher and more spectacular with Mount Vinson(4,892 m) constituting the highest point on the continent. Here we report on a new site (79°49.213'S, 83°18.860'W, 718 m elevation) located on the side of Mount Dolence in Ellsworth Land, Antarctica. Dry permafrost - ground with temperature always below 0°C and containing negligible ice - overlying ice-cemented ground has been reported in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica and on Mars. The barren ice-capped region averages 2,600–6,500 feet (800–2,000 metres) above sea level in altitude, except along its mountainous coast, where in the Flood… This includes data values and the controlled vocabularies that house them.
