Savo Island is an island in Solomon Islands in the southwest South Pacific ocean. The Battle of Savo Island and the Battle of the Eastern Solomons comprise one of a series of twenty-one published and thirteen unpublished Combat Narratives of specific naval campaigns produced by the Publications Branch of the Office of Naval Intelligence during World War II. The Japanese ships actually split into two distinct groups during this part of the battle which isn't depicted on this map. The waters surrounding the island were the site of five of the seven major naval battles during the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific War. Savo Island also has a minority of Gela speakers. The decision was taken by Kirishima’s Captain to order the ship abandoned shortly before 0300hrs.

The ship was sunk 2 1/2 - 3 miles east of Savo Island in the waters now known as Ironbottom Sound, and now the resting place Harold John Mack.
