The son of a captain in the mercantile marine, Jellicoe was educated at Rottingdean and entered the Royal Navy as a naval cadet in 1872. However, he could lose the war if he lost that superiority. His chapter on Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, “Sailor With a Flawed Cutlass,” remains, in my opinion, a masterpiece of interdisciplinary historical analysis. Other fine books followed, including John Campbell’s Jutland: An Analysis of the Fighting 3 , which dug as deeply into the details of the battle damage inflicted on May 31 st , 1916 as anyone could wish. John Jellicoe was born in Southampton in 1859. The battle unfolded in extensive manoeuvring and three main engagements (the battlecruiser action, the fleet action and the night action), from 31 May to 1 June 1916, off the North Sea coast of Denmark's JutlandPeninsula. He The Battle of Jutland (German: Skagerrakschlacht, the Battle of Skagerrak) was a naval battle fought between Britain's Royal Navy Grand Fleet, under Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, and the Imperial German Navy's High Seas Fleet, under Vice-Admiral Reinhard Scheer, during the First World War. Admiral Jellicoe found fame in World War One as the admiral who led the British Navy at the Battle of Jutland. My grandfather, Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, commanded the British Grand Fleet that day and his reputation has arguably never recovered.

What I found fascinating was the work Admiral John Jellicoe did after the Battle of Jutland. Jellicoe did not have to win Jutland to maintain Britain’s blockade and keep the war going. He joined the Royal Navy in 1872, becoming a captain … John Rushworth Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe, British admiral of the fleet who commanded at the crucial Battle of Jutland (May 31, 1916) during World War I.
